Roaddog Baja i3 Rework Introduction

The Roaddog Labs Ltd Baja is our variant of the Prusa i3 Rework. One difference with this build is the frame is made from melamine. This lowers the cost of the machine and still provides the same performance as an i3 Rework. We've also changed the extruder gears to a herringbone design.


This printer derives from the original Prusa single plate i3, also known as an i3 by Josef Prusa. It was introduced mid 2012 but didn't start to gain a lot of traction until early 2013. The i3 variants are now one of the most popular, if not the most popular low cost DIY 3D printer. Prusa didn't iterate the original much after the original launch. It was others in the community that drove the next iterations. Other versions adding M10 cross rods such as the Einstein started to appear a year or so after the i3 was released. Based on the variant Einstein eMotion-Tech in France (Reprap France) in the summer of 2013 introduced the Rework variant. The Rework included the M10 cross rods of the Einstein, some mods to the printed parts, a streamlined hardware BOM and an extruder design that mounts perpendicular to the X axis. Mounting the extruder in that way frees up some space to give the machine a full 200 mm X build envelope. With a parallel mounted extruder in some cases as much as 40 mm of the X build envelope was sacrificed in some builds.

We started selling aluminum frame Rework kits in late 2013 after building a Rework variant for our in house bot farm. We had been selling the original Prusa i3 aluminum frame single plate kits for about year prior and the Rework was a natural progression. To my knowlege we were the first US producer of i3 aluminum single plates in quantity. In spring of 2014 I was looking for a way to reduce the cost of the kit as many makers wanted to build printers but couldn't afford the aluminum frames and didn't want to build a box frame i3. The aluminum frame was a big driver of the costs. I ran across Shane Graber's birch i3 frame (sgraber i3) and used that as the basis for the Baja frame. The name Baja is for our dog Baja. The Baja is basically a Rework with an sgraber frame.

Where applicable, the license of any derived work will be posted as well. The original Rework printed parts files are released under GPL 2.0. The Graber i3 is licensed under GPL v3.0. Renderings in the build docs from eMotion-Tech (Reprap France) are used under GPL v 2.0
